The 1918 Lincoln-Illinois Centennial half dollar was the first U.S. commemorative coin to honor Abraham Lincoln. PCGS has graded 1,447 as MS65 with 900 finer.
Authorized by Congress to mark the 100th anniversary of Illinois’ statehood, it was designed by George T. Morgan (obverse) and John R. Sinnock (reverse). Only 100,058 pieces were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, with 6,006 later melted, leaving a net distribution of roughly 94,000.
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of Lincoln based on Andrew O’Connor’s iconic statue, while the reverse depicts a striding eagle adapted from the Great Seal, with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “HALF DOLLAR” around the rim.
Numismatic scholar Taxay writes, “it is undoubtedly the finest work Morgan ever did in his forty-eight years with the Mint. The head is not merely well drawn, there is in it a depth of feeling, an introspective mood that almost makes the observer feel he is intruding on the great man.” Of Morgan’s design, David Lange writes, “Better than Brenner’s cent rendering was the bust of Lincoln on the 1918 Illinois Centennial half dollar.”
