Authorized by Congress in 1890 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s voyage, it supported the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, originally planned for 1892 but delayed to 1893 due to construction setbacks. A total of 950,000 pieces were minted that year at the Philadelphia Mint, with an additional 1,550,405 struck in 1893; they sold for one dollar each—double face value—at the fair, though overall sales fell short of the authorized production.
