The 1892 Columbian Exposition Silver Commemorative Half Dollar marked the dawn of U.S. commemorative coinage, produced to honor the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's voyage to the New World. Issued by the Philadelphia Mint, and designed and engraved by Charles E. Barber, with a mintage of 950,000, it celebrated the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, which was delayed to 1893 due to construction setbacks.
Composed of 90% silver, this Classic Commemorative half dollar was sold at the fair for $1 to fund the event. Though intended for circulation, many were hoarded as souvenirs. Coin dealer Jeff Garrett recently purchased a hoard of 200 uncirculated Columbian half dollars. Proof versions number just 103, but business strikes at times exhibit prooflike surfaces—deep, reflective mirrors with sharp details—distinguishing them from standard frosty examples.
Graded MS-65 Prooflike by NGC, this coin exemplifies gem uncirculated preservation, blending pristine luster and bold strike that enhances its historical allure. Such specimens command premiums among collectors, evoking the era's patriotic fervor while standing as a foundational piece in classic commemorative sets. NGC has graded 59 as MS65 Prooflike with 25 finer.
