Flowing Hair Dollars

The first official U.S. silver Dollar, authorized by the Mint Act of April 2, 1792, was struck in 1794, with about 2,000 produced at .8924 fine silver content. Likely designed by Robert Scot, the 1794 Flowing Hair Dollar is a classic rarity, highly prized in any condition as the premier silver Dollar in U.S. history. Its design, used in 1794-1795, mirrors contemporary half dimes and half dollars, featuring Miss Liberty’s small head facing right with flowing hair, LIBERTY above, the date below, and 15 stars split eight left, seven right. The reverse shows a small eagle on a cloud within an open wreath, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, with a denticle border. Mintage records show 1,758 struck in 1794 and 160,295 in 1795, though some 1795 coins may bear the 1794 date, possibly totaling 5,000-6,000. The 1794 Dollar is a major rarity in all grades, while 1795 examples are more attainable for type set collectors, typically seen in About Good to Very Fine condition, often with mint-caused adjustment marks and light strikes. Extremely Fine pieces are scarce, About Uncirculated ones rare, and strictly Uncirculated examples very rare.
