The 1918 Lincoln-Illinois Silver Commemorative Half Dollar marks a pivotal moment in American numismatics, issued to celebrate the centennial of Illinois' statehood in 1818. It was the very first Classic Commemorative coin to celebrate an individual state. NGC has graded 10 as MS67+ with only 11 finer.
Authorized by Congress, the U.S. Mint produced 100,000 pieces (plus 58 for assay) at the Philadelphia Mint, making it one of the more accessible early commemoratives. This obverse of this coin was Designed by George T. Morgan—depicting a youthful, clean-shaven Abraham Lincoln—and J.R. Sinnock crafted the reverse, inspired by the Illinois state seal.
It could be argued that this coin is the finest work of both George T. Morgan and John R. Sinnock. Writing in The Numismatist in April 1937, John F. Jones says, “the coin is classed as the most beautiful of all our commemoratives.” During his lengthy tenure at the U.S. Mint, Morgan’s artistic talents grew significantly. The evidence of that is his excellent work on the 1918 Illinois half dollar. Perhaps he learned much by working under Charles E. Barber for many years (1880-1917).
