CAC. The 1836 $2.50 Classic Head Quarter Eagle Script 8 is a dramatic U.S. gold coin minted in Philadelphia. PCGS has graded 41 as MS63 with 20 finer. In CAC, there are 12 in MS63 with 10 finer.
This variety features a script-style "8" in the date, distinguishing it from the Block 8 type. The Philadelphia Mint struck 547,986 pieces, making it the most produced date in the Classic Head series, which ran from 1834 to 1839.
The obverse shows Liberty facing left with curly hair and a classic profile, designed by William Kneass. Thirteen stars surround her, with "LIBERTY" above and the date below. The reverse depicts a bald eagle with spread wings, holding arrows and an olive branch, perched above "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "2 1/2 D." Strikes often show softness in the center, with sharper details on stars and feathers.
This PCGS MS-63 example exhibits mint luster and minimal marks, qualifying for the green-stickered CAC approval. It represents early federal gold coinage after the 1834 reduction in gold content to combat export. Collectors value it for its availability and historical tie to Jackson-era economics.
