The 1874-CC $10 Liberty Head Eagle, graded NGC XF-45, is a significant artifact from the Carson City Mint. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, it features Liberty’s coroneted profile on the obverse, symbolizing freedom, and a heraldic eagle on the reverse, clutching arrows and an olive branch. The "CC" mintmark signifies its Nevada origin, a nod to the region’s gold and silver mining boom.
In XF-45 condition, the coin shows moderate wear, with softened details in Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers, yet retains much of its original luster. Its surfaces bear light abrasions, reflecting careful circulation and preservation over time.
“Of the three denominations of gold struck at this mint,” writes Doug Winter in Coinweek (October 30, 2017), “the eagles are the rarest and the most difficult to complete in higher grades. Every date from the 1870s is either unknown or extremely rare in Uncirculated. Even the reasonably available 1874-CC has just two or three known in Uncirculated and it is very rare even in properly graded AU55 to AU58.” Currently, the only uncirculated examples known are one graded MS63 by PCGS and one graded MS65 by NGC.
