CAC. The 1935 Spanish Trail Silver Commemorative Half Dollar marks the 400th anniversary of the Old Spanish Trail, a historic route through the Southwest. PCGS has graded 754 as MS66 with 327 finer. In CAC, there are 202 in MS66 with 89 finer.
Congress authorized 10,000 coins on June 5, 1935; the Philadelphia Mint struck 10,008, including assays. This low-mintage issue honors explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, whose 1528–1536 odyssey from Florida to the Pacific influenced early regional maps.
El Paso dealer L.W. Hoffecker designed the coin and led its legislative push after a failed 1930 Gadsden Purchase proposal. The obverse shows the skull of a bull; the reverse features a yucca and prickly pear cactus framing “Old Spanish Trail,” with a map of the route from Florida to El Paso, Texas. Engraver George V. Senn rendered the models with sharp Southwestern detail.
