The 1797 Draped Bust Silver Dollar, graded PCGS AU-50 (BB-71, 10x6 Stars), is a rare artifact from the early U.S. Mint. PCGS has graded only 57 of the BB-71. Of those, they have graded 2 as AU50 with 11 finer. Only 7,776 of the 10 x 6 Stars coins were produced in 1797. Collector’s Universe (CU) prices this variety at $21,000 in AU50. When Tennessee gained admission to the Union a 16th star was added to the obverse of all the coin denominations in current production. For the 1797 dollar, stars were arranged in one of two configurations: 9 stars on the left and 7 on the right or 10 stars on the left and 6 stars on the right. This offering represents the only variety with the 10x6 star arrangement, the BB-71. Continuing to add stars for each state admitted into the United States was untenable and the 1797 silver dollars proved to be the first and the last of the denomination to possess 16 stars.
