The 1799 Draped Bust Silver Dollar, graded PCGS VF-35, is a solid Very Fine example of America’s early silver dollar series. Struck at Philadelphia, it shows Liberty’s draped bust on the obverse and the heraldic eagle on the reverse. This coin belongs to the BB-158 die marriage, identified by specific star positions and die characteristics.
Its standout feature is a 5% off-center strike, an uncommon mint error for the period. The design is shifted noticeably yet remains fully dated and legible, creating an eye-catching irregularity on an otherwise typical early dollar. Off-center errors of this magnitude are rarely seen on 1799 dollars and add significant rarity.
Though the holder does not carry the BB-158 attribution, Russell has confirmed the variety from visible markers. PCGS has graded and slabbed only 29 examples of BB-158 in all grades combined. This piece combines strong eye appeal, a clear mint error, and the desirable BB-158 variety.
