Designed by William Marks Simpson, the coin was struck at a single mint (Philadelphia) with a limited mintage of just 18,000 pieces, all distributed through the Antietam Battlefield Commission.
The obverse features conjoined busts of Union General George B. McClellan and Confederate General Robert E. Lee facing left. Surrounding them is the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST,” with “LIBERTY” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.” The reverse depicts the Burnside Bridge spanning Antietam Creek, a key tactical point in the battle. “SEVENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY BATTLE OF ANTIETAM” is around the rim and the date “1937” is below.
