CAC. The 1936 Gettysburg commemorative half dollar was issued to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the 1863 Civil War battle. Authorized in 1936, dated 1936, and minted in 1937 at Philadelphia, only 26,928 pieces were distributed (many unsold coins were later melted).Designed by Frank Vittor, the obverse depicts conjoined busts of a Union and a Confederate soldier, symbolizing reconciliation. The reverse features divided Union and Confederate shields separated by a fasces, flanked by oak branches (war/strength) and olive branches (peace), with the inscription "1863 75th ANNIVERSARY 1938 BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG."It is highly sought by collectors for its historical significance and attractive design, with gem examples (MS65+) being particularly scarce.
