The 1836 Capped Bust Half Dollar marks the final year of the classic Lettered Edge design introduced in 1807. PCGS has graded 232 as AU50 with 965 finer.
After nearly three decades, the Mint retired both the John Reich-inspired bust and the “FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR” lettering on the rim, replacing them in 1837 with the lighter Reeded Edge series.
This example is the O-102 variety (R.2), identified by the bold recutting on star 8 and the distinctive position of the 6 in the date relative to the drapery. Struck during the transition period, many 1836 lettered-edge halves show soft central details, but well-struck pieces like this AU-50 retain sharp hair waves, clear drapery folds, and crisp eagle feathers.
Light golden-gray toning clings to the protected areas, while the open fields show honest circulation rub without distracting marks. The lettered edge remains fully legible, a detail that disappeared forever after this single year. For collectors of the Capped Bust series, the 1836 Lettered Edge represents the dignified end of an era that began with the young republic itself.
