Although the recorded mintage stands at 7,294,000 pieces, the issue is genuinely rare today. Combined certification totals from PCGS and NGC amount to just 2,157 coins, representing a mere 0.0295 percent of the original production. Such a dramatic attrition rate places the 1858-O among the more elusive Liberty Seated half dollars relative to its mintage.
This disparity is largely explained by mass exportation. Significant quantities of 1858-O half dollars were shipped overseas, particularly to China, Canada, and Latin America. As a result, surviving examples today are tangible remnants of a coinage deeply intertwined with 19th-century global silver flows.
