The 1861 Liberty Seated Half Dollar is a compelling survivor from the opening year of the Civil War, a period marked by political rupture and monetary uncertainty. Struck as the nation fractured, this issue circulated at a time when silver coinage was both hoarded and displaced by wartime finance, lending added historical gravity to any well-preserved example.
This specimen, certified PCGS XF-45, displays honest wear that preserves strong design elements while reflecting real-world use. PCGS reports just 141 examples graded at XF-45, with 610 finer, underscoring the difficulty of locating the issue in wholesome mid-level circulated grades. Despite a mintage of 2,887,400 pieces, truly collectible survivors are far scarcer than the raw numbers suggest.
In total, PCGS and NGC have certified only 1,678 examples—approximately 0.058 percent of the original mintage. Such an extraordinarily low survival rate strongly indicates domestic hoarding, as well as export to China, Canada, and Latin America, where U.S. silver coins were widely accepted for trade. As a result, the 1861 half dollar stands today as a legitimately rare Civil War–era issue.
