The 1874-S Liberty Head Double Eagle is a date that becomes dramatically more elusive as the grades rise. While attractive Mint State examples exist, locating a truly high-end survivor is another matter altogether. PCGS has graded 685 examples in MS61, with only 158 finer, illustrating just how limited the supply becomes beyond this level for collectors pursuing premium San Francisco double eagles.
This issue is virtually impossible to locate above MS62, making the small number of higher-grade survivors especially significant. Even MS62 coins present a formidable challenge, and opportunities to acquire one are few and far between. As a result, an original, well-preserved MS61 represents an appealing balance of quality, rarity, and collectability within this difficult issue.
Most 1874-S double eagles entered commercial channels during an era when large gold coins served everyday banking and international trade. Heavy circulation and later melting steadily reduced the surviving population, leaving relatively few Mint State examples. Today, a PCGS MS61 offers collectors the chance to own a scarce San Francisco double eagle that stands well above the typical survivor while remaining obtainable compared to the nearly unattainable finer-known pieces.
