Designed by James B. Longacre, its obverse features a coronet-adorned Liberty facing left, surrounded by 13 stars, while the reverse showcases a heraldic eagle with shield, olive branch, and arrows beneath “TWENTY D.”
This specimen’s “Ex.SS Republic” provenance traces it to the 1865 steamship sinking off Georgia during a hurricane while carrying California gold to post-war New Orleans. Rediscovered in 2003 by Odyssey Marine Exploration at 1,700 feet, the wreck yielded over 51,000 coins, many preserved by cold, low-oxygen depths.
In MS-63, it exhibits strong luster, minimal contact marks, and warm honey-gold patina, with sharp details on Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s feathers. The grade reflects light surface ticks expected from brief circulation before the shipwreck, making it a tangible link to maritime and numismatic history.
