The 1907 $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle in High Relief, Flat Edge format represents a dramatic reimagining of American coinage at the dawn of the twentieth century. Sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens at the urging of Theodore Roosevelt, the design broke sharply from decades of conservative minting, introducing bold depth, sculptural modeling, and a sense of motion rarely seen on circulating coinage.
Because of its striking artistry and its status as a radical departure from earlier double eagle designs, the High Relief issue was widely recognized as something special from the outset. Many examples were set aside and carefully preserved, resulting in a notable number of surviving pieces, including a meaningful population in choice and gem uncirculated grades. PCGS has certified 61 at MS-66, with just 24 finer.
Though not rare in an absolute sense, the High Relief double eagle enjoys enduring demand rooted in its historical importance, limited production, and extraordinary visual appeal.
