The 1907 High Relief, Wire Edge $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagle represents the boldest transformation of American coinage. Conceived through the collaboration of President Theodore Roosevelt and sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the design sought to elevate U.S. coinage to the artistic standards of the ancient Greek world. This dramatic coin was unlike anything previously struck by the US Mint.
With a mintage of only 11,250 pieces, the High Relief double eagle was never practical for large-scale production. Each coin required three to five blows of the dies to bring up the design fully, a labor-intensive process that quickly convinced Mint officials to adopt the lower-relief version later in 1907. As a result, the High Relief pieces stand apart as a short-lived but extraordinary experiment in American medallic art.
David Akers once wrote that the 1907 High Relief double eagle is “the most beautiful coin the United States ever issued for normal circulation.” Examples are nearly always fully struck, as expected from the repeated striking process. Most display deeply frosted surfaces, sometimes with a satiny texture, brilliant luster, and the light to medium greenish-gold coloration.
