Graded AU-58 by NGC, this example sits near the top of the condition census, with just 34 certified at this level and only 12 finer. Plus, this piece has semi-prooflike surfaces. While the Large Date is scarcer overall than its Small Date counterpart, it has long benefited from a small concentration of higher-grade survivors, many traced to the Jackson, Tennessee hoard of the early 1980s.
As noted by Doug Winter, “This is an interesting variety whose rarity has been overstated in the past. It is scarcer than the 1854-O Small Date in terms of total number known... It is one of the more available New Orleans eagles in higher grades, but it is still very scarce in properly graded AU55 to AU58 and rare in Uncirculated.”
