With a mintage of 105,100 pieces, the 1856-S is the most plentiful No Motto half eagle from San Francisco. Numismatist Douglas Winter has written that the issue is the most available of the type from this mint, estimating that roughly 250 to 300 examples survive today. Even so, most known pieces are heavily worn from circulation in the gold economy of the mid-19th century American frontier.
This PCGS VF-30 example represents an appealing mid-grade survivor of a coin that saw real commercial use during California’s formative years. PCGS has graded just 12 pieces at this level with 206 finer, while CAC reports only two examples approved in VF30 with 49 finer, underscoring the relative scarcity of choice circulated specimens.
