Coins from this mint typically saw extensive commercial use in California’s hard-money marketplace, and few escaped prolonged circulation. As a result, most examples encountered today are well worn, making any mid-grade survivor an important representative of the issue.
Specialists have long recognized the rarity of the date. According to noted numismatic scholar Doug Winter, the 1860-S is a rare and underappreciated issue with an estimated surviving population of roughly 60 to 70 coins. He further notes that the date becomes very rare in higher grades, underscoring how few pieces were preserved before entering decades of circulation in the American West.
