The 1894 $5 Liberty Head half eagle was struck during a period when gold coinage flowed routinely through American banks and commercial channels. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, the Liberty Head series had been in production since 1839, and by the 1890s the design was a familiar presence in everyday financial life. Coins like the 1894 issue were workhorses of the monetary system, circulating widely in commerce at a time when gold still anchored the nation’s currency.
Although this date is considered common within the series, it reflects the steady output of late-19th-century U.S. Mint operations. Many examples survived in high grades because banks and individuals often held gold coins in storage rather than putting them immediately into circulation. As a result, collectors today encounter the 1894 half eagle with some regularity, particularly in mint state.
This example is certified by PCGS as MS-61. PCGS has graded 443 coins at this level, with 3,481 examples recorded in finer condition. Even so, pieces in the lower Mint State range still convey the original character of a freshly struck gold coin from the closing decade of the 19th century.
