Though initially controversial for its recessed fields (critics feared dirt accumulation and counterfeiting risks), the design quickly won admirers for its artistic daring and matte-like beauty. Struck in 90% gold from 1908 through 1915 and again from 1925 to 1929, the series totals just fifteen issues, with only two from the Denver mint (1911-D and 1925-D).
