This piece is the famous “No L” variety, sometimes called the “Christmas” variety, referring to the missing initial for designer James B. Longacre on the truncation of Liberty’s neck. Only 1,000 examples were struck in a single day in May 1849 before the omission was noticed and corrected. As a result, these coins occupy a special place among specialists as the first collectible variety of the new denomination.
Certified NGC MS-62 and approved by CAC, the coin sits comfortably within the Mint State range where original luster and detail remain attractive. NGC has graded 93 examples at this level with 197 finer, while CAC reports just 9 pieces in MS62 with 84 finer, confirming the select status of this early and historic issue.
