Although the recorded mintage lists 45,080 pieces, Mint practices of the era complicate any straightforward interpretation of that figure.
As Heritage Auctions has observed: “The 1837 quarter eagle issue by any measure is the rarest, most elusive, and priciest of the first four Classic Head quarter eagles.... The mintage was recorded at only 45,080 pieces--but Mint history makes it clear that to assume all of those coins were dated 1837 would be an enormous leap of faith.” Subsequent research supports the conclusion that far fewer examples were actually struck with this date.
Certified NGC MS-63, this coin represents the finest level recorded for the issue at NGC. NGC has graded just six examples in MS63, with none finer known. The combination of condition rarity and revised understanding of its true production places the 1837 quarter eagle among the most elusive gold issues of its early denomination.
