The 1855-C $2.50 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle is a classic product of the Charlotte Mint, a facility that served the Southern gold fields and produced some of the rarest U.S. gold issues. Doug Winter notes, “The 1855-C has the lowest mintage of any individual date Charlotte quarter eagle…. The 1855-C remains one of the scarcest Charlotte quarter eagles in terms of overall rarity,” a judgment supported by both historical records and modern population data.
Its mintage was a scant 3,677 pieces, making it the lowest-mintage quarter eagle from Charlotte and one of the key issues in the entire Liberty Head series. Survival rates are extremely low, as many examples were lost to circulation, melting, or later gold recoveries.
In PCGS F15, this coin represents a solid, problem-free survivor from a notoriously elusive issue. PCGS has graded just 2 examples at the F15 level, with 77 finer. The grade reflects honest circulation, yet still preserves clear design details and strong historical character, making it a desirable representative of antebellum Southern gold coinage.
