This impressive 1937 Gold Proof Five Pounds (equivalent to five sovereigns) was struck at the Royal Mint to commemorate the coronation of King George VI on May 12, 1937, following the abdication of his brother Edward VIII. Issued as part of limited gold proof sets with a mintage of just 5,500 pieces, it remains a highly sought-after numismatic treasure and the only five-pound coin produced during George VI's reign (1936–1952).
The obverse features a dignified bare head of the King facing left, encircled by the Latin legend: GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX F : D : IND : IMP (George VI, by the Grace of God, King of all the Britains, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India). This classic portrait was designed by Thomas Humphrey Paget.
The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci's iconic depiction of St. George slaying the dragon: the saint on horseback rearing right, lance broken in the beast's chest, with the date 1937 and designer's initials B.P. in the exergue.
Struck in 22-carat gold with a plain edge, this proof exemplifies Royal Mint craftsmanship and historical significance.
