The 1861 Confederate (CSA) Half Dollar Scott Restrike is a notable post–Civil War issue that reflects early collector interest in preserving Confederate numismatic history. This piece was produced in 1879 by J.W. Scott using the original Confederate reverse die, paired with a specially prepared token obverse rather than a U.S. Seated Liberty half dollar. The obverse carries a Confederate motif, while the opposite side bears an explanatory inscription detailing the origin of the original 1861 issue.
The inscription reads: “Originals Struck by Order of C.S.A. in New Orleans 1861. Rev. Same as U.S. (From Original Die: Scott).” This text was intentionally added to clearly distinguish the restrikes from coins struck during the Civil War, while still emphasizing their connection to the original Confederate half dollars.
Graded PCGS MS-62, this example is well preserved for the issue. PCGS has certified 26 pieces at the MS-62 level, with 48 examples graded finer, placing it within a limited and well-documented population.
