The 1851 Territorial Gold “880” $50 Augustus Humbert "Lettered Edge" issue represents one of the most evocative products of the early California Gold Rush. Struck under the authority of U.S. Assayer Augustus Humbert, these massive gold pieces were created to bring order and trust to a chaotic bullion economy, when raw gold dust and private ingots dominated commerce. The boldly stamped “880” fineness reflects the practical realities of frontier assaying in 1851.
This example is the scarce K-2 variety, distinguished by the absence of the denomination “50” on the reverse. That omission places it among the earliest emissions of Humbert’s fifty-dollar pieces, before later design adjustments standardized the format. The reason the design was changed from the Lettered Edge to the Reeded Edge is most likley because it took 14 different processes just to make one coin!
Graded PCGS F-15, this coin is the sole example at that level, with just 68 finer across all grades. Its heavy wear speaks directly to its use during the heady, formative months of the Gold Rush, making it a tangible relic of California’s earliest monetary history.
