The 1857/0 Justh & Hunter 49er Horseman is a modern commemorative restrike (struck in 2002 by the Royal Canadian Mint), not an original 1850s California private gold coin. It was produced using gold recovered from Justh & Hunter assay ingots sunk aboard the S.S. Central America in 1857. These restrikes are certified by PCGS as Deep Cameo Proof (often labeled with the ingot's fineness, such as .906 or similar).The coin contains 0.54 troy ounces of actual gold weight (pure gold content). This equates to slightly more than half an ounce of gold, as consistently stated across numismatic dealers and auction houses. Sources like APMEX and GovMint.com explicitly list it as containing .54 oz actual gold weight. The total planchet weight is higher (due to the ingots' fineness ranging from about .887 to .906, meaning 88.7–90.6% pure gold), but the pure gold content remains standardized at 0.54 troy ounces across the limited mintage of 4,006 pieces. This gold comes directly from melted-down historic Justh & Hunter ingots, giving the piece its "California Gold" designation and tie to the Gold Rush era and shipwreck.
