Ex.1715 Fleet holder. Charles II Gold Cob 2 Escudos – Bogotá Mint (Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino), ca. 1667–1699. Assayer Ramos (R), mintmark NR · KM-14.1. Struck during a brief transitional period in the late 1660s to 1670s under assayer Ramos, this scarce Bogotá subtype is instantly recognizable by the distinctive placement of the assayer letter R below the Roman-numeral denomination II (to the right of the shield) and the mintmark NR to the left. These early issues typically appear on smaller, thicker, and somewhat neater flans compared to the crude, irregular later Bogotá cobs of Charles II. Far rarer than the familiar undated “A” series that later supplied much of the gold aboard the 1715 Plate Fleet, the Ramos issues represent one of the most elusive subgroups in Colombian cob coinage. High-grade examples that clearly show the assayer, denomination, full crown, bold Jerusalem cross, and sharp shield details are genuinely uncommon and highly prized by specialists in Spanish colonial gold. With their warm harvest-gold color, occasional light sea sediment in protected crevices, and unmistakably hand-hammered character, surviving pieces carry tremendous historical romance—evoking the earliest decades of the Bogotá mint and the remote, mountainous Nuevo Reino de Granada that produced some of Spain’s most legendary New World treasure.1667-1699
