The 1857-S $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle stands out among San Francisco Mint issues due to its distinctive inverted “S” mintmark. Struck during the California Gold Rush, this variety occurred when the mintmark punch was accidentally oriented upside down before being applied to the die. Only a small portion of the 1857-S twenties exhibit this error, making it a recognized and collected variety among numismatists.
In total, NGC has graded 139 of the 1857-S $20 Liberty head double eagles as AU50 with 1,202.
This particular example, graded NGC AU-50, comes from the wreck of the SS Republic, a sidewheel steamship that sank in 1865 off the Georgia coast while carrying gold coins and other cargo from New York to New Orleans. Recovered in 2003 by Odyssey Marine Exploration after lying nearly 1,700 meters deep for 138 years, this coin is an important relic of both maritime and numismatic history. This 1857-S twenty would be a wonderful addition to your collection.
