CAC. 1796 Draped Bust, $1 Small Date, Small Letters variety. Bowers Die State I. For the 1796 dollars, there are three distinct Small Date, Small Letters die pairs, two with Small Date, Large Letters, and just one with Large Date, Small Letters. All Small Date, Small Letters combinations are either scarce or extremely rare. The B-1, BB-66 variety is in the former category, and this is a marvelously preserved example of that die marriage. Considerable luster remains on each side, filtering through a thick layer of golden-gray, orange, blue, and violet patina. Aside from a small nick on the neck, the portrait is free of most distractions.
