1802/1 $1 Draped Bust Silver Dollar PCGS XF-45 BB-233, CAC

CAC. The BB-233 is one of the scarcer overdate varieties of the 1802/1 Draped Bust dollar, with a surviving population generally estimated at only 75–200 pieces in all grades. High-grade examples are particularly elusive; anything grading above VF is seldom seen, and AU examples are legitimately rare. This attractive PCGS XF45 example has earned the prestigious green CAC sticker, placing it among the finest survivors of the variety. For all varieties of the 1802/1, CAC records show just (4) in XF45 with (7) finer, while PCGS population data for the issue shows 47 in XF45 with 84 reported finer (all varieties combined). When Mark Borckardt and Q. David Bowers published their landmark reference Silver Dollars & Trade Dollars of the United States in 1993, this coin was already recognized in the Condition Census for the variety. In their roster of notable BB-233 specimens, the then finest known graded 50-45-45-40-40-40-40-35-35—this coin being one of the two XF45s listed. The Condition Census landscape changed dramatically in 2020 when the Eric P. Newman Collection revealed the only confirmed Mint State example: a spectacular NGC MS64 that also carries a CAC sticker. Notably, the majority of high-grade 1802/1 dollars that have achieved CAC approval belong to the more available BB-234 variety. After extensive research, this PCGS XF45 CAC is therefore arguably the second-finest CAC-approved BB-233 known to exist—a remarkable survivor from one of the most challenging early dollar die marriages.
