Struck in San Francisco by the newly appointed United States Assayer of Gold, Augustus Humbert, these massive octagonal fifty-dollar pieces served as an emergency private coinage when the federal government could provide no official solution for circulating refined gold. It had a stated weight of “887 Thous” (887 thousandths fine, approximately 41.35 grams).
The obverse features a finely engraved eagle holding a shield, surrounded by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIFTY DOLLS,” while the reverse displays an engine-turned pattern. The heavy, imposing planchet—nearly the size of a silver dollar but twice as thick—gave merchants and miners confidence in its intrinsic value.
