The 1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar represents the first silver dollars series produced by the young United States Mint. PCGS has graded 46 as VG8 with 568 finer.
Authorized by the Coinage Act of 1792 and produced in 1794–1795, it carries the elegant Flowing Hair portrait of Liberty on the obverse, designed by Robert Scot and engraved by Joseph Wright. The reverse features a small eagle perched on a rock, surrounded by palm and olive branches arranged in two leaves beneath the eagle—an early diagnostic variety known as “Two Leaves.”
This particular coin, graded PCGS VG-8, displays honest circulation wear. The major design elements remain clear: Liberty’s hair flows distinctly, seven stars appear left and eight right, and the date 1795 is legible. On the reverse, the eagle, wreath, and “Two Leaves” configuration are fully attributable despite surface marks and softness from handling.
The Flowing Hair dollar with Two Leaves variety (Bolender-2, BB-21) is actively collected by early type enthusiasts. Surviving examples in VG-8 display attractive steel-gray patina, offering a tangible link to America’s earliest federal coinage at a more affordable price.
