Authorized in 1861 at the New Orleans Mint shortly after Louisiana seceded, just four original examples were produced using a modified U.S. half dollar reverse and a specially cut Confederate obverse die featuring a seated Liberty with shield and liberty cap.
Due to the Confederacy’s brief existence and limited resources, no regular circulation issues followed. In 1879, former Confederate Mint Chief Assayer Ebenezer Locke Mason Jr. acquired the original obverse die and struck 500 restrikes on new planchets using a U.S. 1861 half dollar reverse. These restrikes, distributed through Philadelphia dealer J.W. Haseltine, are the only obtainable versions of this historic design.
The CAC endorsement confirms exceptional quality within the grade. With only 500 pieces made and far fewer surviving in Mint State, it remains one of the most significant artifacts of the Confederacy available to collectors.
