The 1907 High Relief Wire Rim Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle emerged from Theodore Roosevelt’s drive to transform U.S. coinage into miniature sculptures. Augustus Saint-Gaudens crafted Liberty mid-stride, torch aloft and olive branch in hand, her flowing gown catching an unseen breeze; the reverse places a commanding eagle above a rising sun framed by rays. Multiple hubbing strikes created the bold relief and left a thin, raised wire rim along the edge, visible only on the earliest pieces.
This NGC UNC Details example retains its original surfaces free of circulation wear, the matte finish and fine feather work intact despite the improper cleaning that earned the “Details” grade.
