This 1829 Capped Bust Half Dime from the Philadelphia Mint marks the resumption of half dime production after a 24-year gap since 1805. NGC has graded 126 as MS64 with 77 finer.
Designed by Chief Engraver William Kneass, it features a smaller adaptation of the Capped Bust motif used on dimes since 1809. The obverse shows Liberty facing left with a liberty cap and beaded border, while the reverse displays a heraldic eagle with arrows and olive branch. LM-1 is identified by specific die markers, such as the recut 9 in the date and a prominent crack on the reverse.
The high mintage makes 1829 half dimes common in circulated and lower mint state grades. LM-1 shares this availability, with examples often showing the original luster from polished dies, though higher grades reveal subtle die states and planchet variations.
Graded MS-64 by NGC, this LM-1 coin exhibits choice uncirculated condition with sharp details and minimal marks. It retains much of the mint bloom, with even strike quality across devices and fields. The grade reflects strong eye appeal typical of the variety, appealing to collectors of early federal silver.
