The 1873 Closed 3 Liberty Head Half Eagle, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, marks a subtle but important variety in the long-running series designed by Christian Gobrecht. PCGS has graded 64 as AU55 with 158 finer.
The "Closed 3" refers to the tightly spaced loops in the date’s final digit, distinguishing it from the more open style used earlier that year. Only 49,280 pieces were minted, a modest output reflecting post-Civil War economic caution.
Gobrecht’s Liberty adorns the obverse, her hair bound in a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, encircled by thirteen stars. The reverse centers a heraldic eagle clutching olive branch and arrows, with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and FIVE D. surrounding.
Graded PCGS AU-55, it retains sharp detail with light friction on the high points and traces of original luster in protected areas. This near-mint example captures the design’s classic elegance and the era’s restrained minting philosophy.
