John Dannreuther Estimates that roughly 30 to 50 examples survive across all grades, a figure published in his book, United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold, while PCGS CoinFacts places the surviving population at approximately 40 to 50 pieces. Of the survivors, two reside in the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution, and one is held by the American Numismatic Society.
This specimen, graded PR-63+ DCAM by PCGS with CAC approval, represents an elite rarity within that small population. PCGS reports just 1 example at the PR63+ DCAM level, with only 17 finer, underscoring its scarcity. In CAC, there is one in PR63+DCAM with 9 finer. The original mintage was 128 pieces, making any surviving example a significant artifact of late 19th-century proof gold coinage.
