Minted during the aftermath of the California Gold Rush, the 1896-S saw a production of 1,403,562 coins. Most entered circulation, enduring wear from commerce across the expanding nation. Surviving examples in PCGS AU-50 grade retain nearly full detail, with light friction on Liberty's cheek and hair, and minimal loss on the eagle's wings and breast.
This AU-50 specimen bridges mint state and circulated condition, preserving luster in protected areas and sharp design elements. Traces of original mint bloom linger in the fields, while subtle cabinet toning enhances its golden surfaces. As a pre-1933 gold issue, it embodies both artistic merit and historical significance from America's Gilded Age.
