Condition Census! We've been able to trace this coin back to 2002, when Heritage sold it at the ANA Auction in July as lot 8442. Heritage descibed this coin as "...The scarcest variety of the 1801 Draped Bust Dollar, B-4 has an extant population of perhaps 400-750 coins. While not really rare in an absolute sense, this variety is conditionally challenging with most survivors exhibiting considerable wear. Not so the present About Uncirculated representative. Both sides retain ample evidence of a bold, well centered strike, and there are blushes of original luster. Lightly toned in slate-gray patina with warmer champagne-gold undertones. The number of wispy abrasions is consistent with an Early Dollar that saw 10 points of wear. Bowers' 1993 listing of "Notable Specimens" of this die marriage reads: MS60; AU58; AU58; AU50; AU50; AU50; AU50; AU50; AU50."
