This 1853-D $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle, graded NGC AU-58, is a desirable coin from the Dahlonega Mint, which operated from 1838 to 1861 in Georgia. This is the popular “Large D” variety. Doug Winter writes, “average About Uncirculated examples can be found without much trouble. This date becomes scarce in high end About Uncirculated and it is rare in Mint State.” Most 1853-D examples are found in lower grades (VF or EF). This issue is a favorite among both mintmarked gold type collectors and Southern gold specialists.
