This 1837 $1 gold Bechtler dollar, struck in Rutherford County, North Carolina, represents one of the earliest private gold coinages in the United States. NGC has graded 16 of this issue as AU58 with 33 finer.
German immigrant Christopher Bechtler, a skilled jeweler and metallurgist, began minting coins in 1831 to serve the Carolina Gold Rush after the federal mint offered no branch in the region. His coins filled a critical need for reliable, standardized currency among miners and merchants.
This K-4 variety is a 28-grain (approximately 1.8-gram) dollar struck in high-purity Carolina gold. The obverse reads ★28: C BECHTLER RUTHERFORD around, while the reverse displays DOLLAR CAROLINA O(N)E★. The reversed N in ONE is prominent. Its characteristically crude yet functional design reflecting the practical needs of the 1830s Carolina gold rush.
Graded NGC AU-58, it retains nearly full detail with light friction on the high points and attractive original surfaces. Well-preserved pieces like this are scarce. It stands as a tangible relic of private enterprise meeting public demand in the antebellum South.
