The 1878-S Morgan Silver Dollar is the first-year issue struck at the San Francisco Mint for the series. NGC has graded 4,864 as MS65 with 980 finer.
Designed by George T. Morgan, it carries the standard Liberty portrait on the obverse with an eagle clutching arrows and olive branch on the reverse. The “S” mintmark sits below the wreath on the reverse.
This particular example has been graded MS-65 by NGC, placing it in the upper range of Mint State coins. At this level it shows strong, clean strikes on both sides, with only minor contact marks and excellent original luster. The cartwheel effect remains lively, and the fields are relatively distraction-free for an 1878-S.
The MS-65 grade indicates a well-preserved piece that still looks much as it did when it left the presses in 1878, offering a sharp, original example of the inaugural San Francisco Morgan dollar.
