Salvaged from the VOC East Indiaman Vliegenthart (’t Vliegent Hart), lost 3 February 1735 off Rammekens, Zeeland. Fresh from refit, bound for Batavia with Anna Catharina, she hit the Duerloo banks in a northeast gale and spring tide, slipped into ten fathoms, and took her crew with her. Company divers failed; a forgotten salvage map led Rex Cowan to the site in 1981. Official chests of Mexican silver and Dutch gold were raised in 1983 and 1992. The Silver Riders came from smaller, smashed boxes—unlisted cargo, almost certainly smuggled for the Indies premium.
The Ducaton features the zilveren rijder of Overijssel: armored horseman, provincial arms, a crown-sized .941 silver piece of about 32.8 grams. AU detail remains under the saltwater surfaces typical of coins that did not ride out the wreck in a sealed chest. Very sharp and lustrous underneath a rich olive toning, with practically no evidence of pitting or corrosion - which is quite unusual for any silver shipwreck issue!
