The first gold coin of the New Orleans Mint, the only Classic Head gold issue from that facility, and the only New Orleans gold coin with the mintmark on the obverse. The same 1835 act that planted gold-only mints at Charlotte and Dahlonega—in the backwater mining districts of North Carolina and Georgia—placed a dual gold-and-silver mint at New Orleans, “the commercial emporium of the southwest,” as Eckfeldt and DuBois later put it. New Orleans mined not ore but commerce. Its bullion arrived as foreign coin from Mexico, Latin America, and Europe, and silver dominated: from opening through 1841 the mint coined more than $1.5 million in silver against only $326,190 in gold, far less than Charlotte or Dahlonega over the same span. When John L. Riddell, the New Orleans melter and refiner, published in 1845, he wrote entirely of silver deposits. Gold was an afterthought.
Just 17,781 quarter eagles were struck there in 1839, a small first gold output; half eagles followed in 1840 and eagles in 1841. William Kneass’s Classic Head, last year of the type, carries the O above the date. Two marriages exist: High Date / Wide Fraction and Low Date / Close Fraction. A port built on trade put its gold into circulation at once, so New Orleans quarter eagles are found well worn more often than this denomination from any other mint. A few Uncirculated pieces were likely saved as souvenirs of the new mint; the rest worked.
This NGC AU-58 is where the date becomes scarce: nearly full luster, only a whisper of friction on Liberty’s hair and the eagle’s wings. As the only Classic Head issue of New Orleans it is a one-year type, and that layer of desirability sits on top of its place as the first gold coin from the nation’s southernmost mint.
