1796 British Token NGC MS-66 D&H-290, Middlesex. Corresponding Society "Liberty & Not Slavery"

The obverse features a hanged man, P - T above, a cap of liberty on a pole, a medallion bearing an anchor with HOPE around, upon the ground is a cross, crown, and other religious objects, beside is a monument inscribed 1796 / PEACE, legend reads LIBERTY . AND . NOT . SLAVERY. The reverse features the Cypher L C S within wreath, outer circle: DEDICATED . TO . THE . LONDON . CORRESPONDING . SOCIETY ; inner circle: MAY . THEIR . ENDEAVOURS. . MEET . REWARD.

D&H stands for Dalton & Hamer, the standard catalog of 18th-century British provincial tokens (Conder tokens). The full title of the reference is The Provincial Token-Coinage of the 18th Century by R. Dalton and S.H. Hamer (originally published 1910–1918, with later reprints and updates). Collectors use D&H numbers the same way U.S. collectors use Sheldon numbers for large cents. Tokens are organized first by country/region, then by county. Within each county they are numbered, generally pennies first, then halfpennies, then farthings. Edge varieties get a letter after the number (e.g., D&H-290a). D&H-290 is the Middlesex halfpenny for the London Corresponding Society issue with the hanging-man / “Liberty and Not Slavery” obverse and the LCS cypher reverse. James Conder published an earlier arrangement in 1798, which is why the series is still commonly called Conder tokens, but Dalton & Hamer is the catalog everyone cites today.
